Frame Conservation
What is it for?
Frame conservation is a specialized intervention that aims to preserve and revitalize this essential element of the artwork. Much more than a simple decorative accessory, the frame fulfills multiple functions: it physically protects the canvas, guides the viewer’s gaze and dialogues with the artwork it surrounds. Its conservation is therefore a global conservation act that fully participates in enhancing the painting.
This intervention allows to:
Stabilize frame structure to ensure its protective role toward the artwork
Consolidate weakened assemblies
that could give way with time
Reconstitute missing decorative elements to recover original aesthetic harmony
Clean soiled surfaces that tarnish the whole’s visual aspect
Restore altered gilding that has lost its brilliance or flaked
Optimize hanging system to guarantee the artwork safety
Specific approach for framing modern and contemporary artworks
At Atelier CROMA, my specialization in modern and contemporary art has led me to develop particular expertise in this field:
Modernist frames often present minimalist but technical designs requiring precise understanding of their conception
Contemporary artworks can include frames being integral part of artistic purpose that must be scrupulously respected
Some contemporary artists choose experimental materials for their framing (plexiglass, metals, composite materials) requiring specific techniques
Large dimensions characteristic of many modern artworks require adapted structural solutions
Dialogue between contemporary artwork and its frame often responds to precise conceptual intentions that it’s essential to document
How I proceed at Atelier CROMA?
As a specialized conservator, I apply rigorous methodology for frame conservation:
1. In-depth frame condition diagnosis
I begin with detailed analysis:
- Technical examination of structure (assemblies, reinforcements, etc.)
- Identification of constitutive materials (wood, stucco, gilding, polychromy, metal…)
- Location of structural alterations (cracks, corner disjunctions, fragilities)
- Observation of aesthetic degradations (losses, wear, soiling)
- Analysis of compatibility with the artwork (dimensions, fixing system, protection)
- Complete photographic documentation under different angles and lighting
2. Development of custom treatment protocol
I then develop adapted strategy:
- Definition of conservation objectives in agreement with owner
- Choice of appropriate techniques respecting frame authenticity
- Selection of conservation materials compatible with original materials
- Planning of different treatment stages in optimal order
3. Structural interventions for stability
I generally begin with:
- Consolidation of weakened assemblies with reversible adapted glues
- Repair of deteriorated elements respecting original techniques
- Revision or replacement of defective hanging systems
4. Respectful aesthetic treatments
I continue with surface treatment:
- Differentiated cleaning adapted to each finish type (gilding, polychromy, raw wood)
- Loss filling with compatible and reversible materials
- Illusionist retouching of treated zones for harmonious integration
- Gilding restoration according to traditional or contemporary techniques
- General harmonisation respecting frame historical patina
5. Adaptation to conservation needs
I finalize intervention by:
- Installation of protection systems between the artwork and frame (neutral materials)
- Optimization of painting fixing guaranteeing its safety without creating tensions
- Addition of protection devices against shocks, dust or insects if necessary (see Back Protection)
- Personalised advice for handling and future frame maintenance
My ecological approach to frame conservation
At Atelier CROMA, my ecological commitment also translates in frame conservation:
Privileged use of natural origin glues (animal glues, plant-based glues)
Preference for natural pigments in polychromy reconstitution
Selection of wood from sustainable sources for structural complements
Use of traditional low-impact finishes (waxes, shellac, natural varnishes)
Limitation of toxic solvents in favor of aqueous solutions or ethanol
Optimization of historical material reuse to limit waste
Design of durable hanging systems avoiding frequent replacements
A restored setting to sublimate your artwork
The frame is much more than a simple border: it’s the transition between viewer’s space and the artwork’s universe. Its conservation contributes significantly to enhancing your painting, while ensuring its physical protection.
At Atelier CROMA, I commit to restoring your frames’ original splendor or designing contemporary framing solutions perfectly adapted to your modern artworks.
